Vitamin deficiency is a ‘time bomb’ and many lack key minerals

Experts have claimed that there is a vitamin deficiency time bomb in the UK, with many people not getting enough of key minerals, such as magnesium, in their diets.

Micronutrients are substances comprising vitamins and minerals that the human body needs in trace amounts. They are described by the World Health Organization as “magic rings” that help the body produce the enzymes and hormones necessary for growth and development.

Magnesium supports over 300 key bodily functions and according to Viridian Nutrition, most people lack adequate amounts of minerals.

It is necessary for electrolyte balance, hormone production and metabolism, energy production and muscle function. As a result, a low level of magnesium has been linked to bad mood, poor sleep, fatigue, stress, and hormonal imbalance.

Spices, nuts, grains, cocoa, and green leafy vegetables like spinach are high in magnesium.

UK National Food and Nutrition Survey analysis (years 1-6) reveals massive magnesium deficiency in young men and women (aged 20) with 19% well below the body’s needs . The increased consumption of refined foods also impacts low mineral levels, and many people required vitamin and mineral supplements.

While magnesium deficiency was most marked, suboptimal levels in this age group were also found in a wide range of essential nutrients, such as vitamin A, riboflavin, folic acid, calcium , magnesium, potassium, iodine, copper, selenium and iron.

Viridian Nutrition named magnesium “Viridian Ingredient of the Year 2022” in anticipation of its positive influence on nutrition and health.

Viridian Technical Director Aimée Benbow said, “Magnesium is an absolute giant in the field of nutrition, with a substantial library of research, significant and widespread deficiency, and the potential of supplements to provide enormous nutritional benefits. .
