Need to get back in shape? Hiring a trainer through FYT could be the answer

With all the events of the past 18 months, it’s no surprise that exercise enthusiasts and gym rats are looking for other ways to maintain their fitness levels without having to step foot in a crowded gym. . In my personal situation, I have been content with a range of options at home, virtual and a lot of time outdoors, but a computer cannot correct your form and I know that if ever I will improve my deadlift I’m going to need a second opinion.
There is no shortage of workout buddy platforms and one of the most popular is FYT (Find Your Trainer). The idea largely works as it sounds: search a list of trainers in your area, match based on time, budget, and availability, then get started.

FYT was founded in 2013 when a former gym operator and tech entrepreneur were looking for a better way to help people get in shape without being limited to the structure of a traditional gym. With eight years under its belt, the platform has become a way for thousands of active users to connect with more than 10,000 trainers serving 97% of all addresses in the United States, according to the company. FYT has trainers in a variety of disciplines, which means users should always be able to find someone for a specific need. For obvious reasons, the platform has grown exponentially throughout the pandemic, especially as more and more users want to return to some sort of guided, in-person training experience.
With the help of the FYT team, I embarked on a four-session trip with a trainer in my area to see where I needed support the most and how my body would respond with returning to a traditional experience.

On the first visit, the site asked for simple information including fitness goals, general location, and desired radius, and then put together a list of trainers in my area. Being in a decently sized city, there was no shortage of options with trainers in a range of specialties. (I should note that many trainers also list their COVID-19 vaccinations.)
My final choice, Chris, had over 15 years of personal training and nutrition experience and seemed like a well-rounded choice for the four sessions I had planned. In my particular case, since I don’t have a suitable home gym space, I filtered my search for a trainer who had their own space. Chris informed me that he was using a friend’s home gym about a 20 minute drive from my house, which is probably the maximum distance I would walk for a workout. Chris contacted via SMS to ask additional questions and schedule our first meeting.
One of the downsides of the FYT platform is that trainers are required to update their uptime and keep it up to date (and it looks like FYT doesn’t particularly monitor this). Timing was a minor issue as I tried to schedule my first session based on my trainer’s availability, but it turned out he was out all week. However, we communicated and defined a better schedule for the following weeks in just a few texts. Problem solved.

Coaches can set their own price and mine was $ 110 per session which seems very much in line with the going rate for a versatile personal trainer. Customers are required to book in increments of four sessions and minor discounts are offered for more engagement upfront. Chris gave me detailed instructions and I arrived for my first session at an upscale home in a suburban area. The current gym was well equipped with a small footprint in half of a large garage. The area was clean and ready for action with sufficient spacing.
Our first session was a full assessment of where I was and a lot of listening to the goals I wanted to achieve. Coming out of this era of prolonged, zero orientation training like most of us knew my form was horrible and wanted to improve a basic range of motion to prevent injury and improve mobility as I climb. in their thirties. At the end of the first session, I felt like we had a good track record.
Ideally, in our digital age, most communication can take place within the centralized platform, but the FYT site itself isn’t great. Once signed up, all you have is a pretty basic profile page, an “FYT Score” that I never really understood, and a checkout area. It should say a lot that my trainer and I have chosen to communicate via text and use external training apps instead of the FYT offering.
Chris actually presented me with a nutrition tracker app where he could also enter a few numbers to help gauge my overall weight loss goal of 5 pounds over our four weeks. I wasn’t a fan at first, but his logic gave me the mental fuel to keep going.
Our second and third sessions focused on these basic forms with weights and a full session dedicated to TRX movements. I was getting exactly the help I needed to work on form and figure out how to effectively get a solid workout in under 45 minutes. Perhaps more importantly, Chris came up with a new way of thinking about foam rolling and pre-workout stretching, something I never thought about until we got to the gym.
Overall experience with FYT
While we wait for our last session (you’re kind of at the mercy of a personal trainer’s program that goes this route), I’m excited to take what I’ve learned and incorporate it into my own home workouts.
Finally, getting some fitness help and even some new exercise ideas was crucial at a time when things seemed to be getting stale. There really is no substitute for working with a qualified, licensed professional and I feel much better (and even more painful) working with someone who knows what they are doing.
For those who need flexibility in their training plans in a less chaotic environment, FYT might be the way to go. The price is reasonable, and with such a variety of trainers available, there’s bound to be something to suit your needs, and there’s a good chance you’ll find the overall experience refreshing while those of us who like. exercise begin to emerge from the repetition. virtual fitness.
