SP Azamgarh Anurag Arya said police arrested the gang after receiving a complaint from a Mahendra Yadav of Riva Sultanpur under Phoolpur police station on May 29, saying he was abducted on April 26 by thugs. gang members posing as police officers who then demanded a ransom of Rs 10 lakhs for his safe release.
Yadav said the kidnappers posed as members of the police special operations group.
Yadav’s brother’s wife gave him jewelry worth Rs 3.60 lakhs and Rs 6.50 lakhs in cash, after which Yadav was released.
Although Yadav filed a complaint after a month of kidnapping, the cops opened an investigation.
Arya said: “Inspector Ahraula, Gajanand Chaubey and his team managed to identify the kidnappers Rajendra Pathak, Prahlad Maurya, Suryabhan Gautam and Manish Pathak and arrested them in an underpass of the Purvanchal highway near the village of Gosaipur .”
Further investigation and questioning revealed that this gang had also committed similar crimes in other districts, the SP added.
The kidnappers revealed that they operated a website using the name of the CIA to extort money from people by posing as senior police and government officials. They modified their SUV to look like a police vehicle.
Further investigation is ongoing as the gang listed several names on their website as members of their office. Police have also started the process to book them under the Gangsters Act.
