French nutrition guide to fight chronic diseases in young people, the elderly and mothers

The advice builds on benchmarks established in 2017 and addresses the nutritional needs of these populations, also focusing on the benefits of physical activity for older people that characterize healthy aging.

“Given the decrease in energy needs with age, maintaining the amounts usually consumed to cover nutritional needs is possible by slightly increasing physical activity.the agency said.

“It also helps protect against a large number of non-communicable diseases and, more specifically, against the pathophysiological effects of aging such as sarcopenia, osteoporosis and cognitive decline.

At one end of the age group, ANSES recommends avoiding excessive consumption of sugars in children aged four and over.

The Agency also calls on the public authorities to urgently implement measures to reduce the risks incurred.

“ANSES places particular emphasis on two priority levers: sugary drinks and pastries-biscuits-cakes, frequently offered at teatime. Indeed, these foods are rich in sugars and have low nutritional value.

“They should be replaced with other more valuable foods such as sugar-free dairy products or other foods high in calcium as well as fresh (ie unprocessed) fruits and nuts.”

Mother-child allowances

Emphasis is placed on vitamins and minerals for pregnant and breastfeeding women because ANSES emphasizes beneficial foods for mother and child during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Dairy products, fruits and vegetables and fish, are identified as a source of essential nutrients for these populations such as iron, iodine, vitamin B9 and folic acid. For lactating women only, vitamins A and C would be covered by these foods.

ANSES also recommends that women of childbearing age maintain their nutritional balance without waiting to become pregnant in order to ensure satisfactory nutritional status at conception.

When discussing the nutritional needs of the elderly, ANSES recommends reducing the portions of certain foods with the exception of fruits, vegetables, fish, molluscs, crustaceans and starches to cover nutritional needs.

ANSES recommends this action if it is not possible to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary times for some of these people.

Like most European countries, France is grappling with a growing elderly population with nearly a fifth of the FrenchAre over 65 according to official figures – just behind Germany.

The National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies says about 19.6% are now over 65, up from 15.5% two decades ago – a problem that is straining the economy, supported by fewer people of working age.

Infant feeding advice

The Agency is also discussing the best way to diversify infant diets. In its opinion on children aged 0 to 3, ANSES specifies a start of diversification between 4 months and not after 6 months.

The provision of a maximum of varied foods between 5 and 18 months, they said with a window of favorable acceptance of new foods opened through the repeated presentation of an initially refused food and the importance of meal schedules precise.

“In addition, many products targeting young children can contribute to their excessive amounts of total sugars”,the agency said.

“Thus, ANSES stresses the importance of establishing sugar content criteria so that these products are suitable for young children.
