Can’t afford all the groceries your family needs? Food pantries give out free food that can help stretch your budget. View this map to find a pantry near you. the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) provides milk, eggs, meat, fresh fruits and vegetables and more every week. Call 703-228-1300 or speak to your child’s school social worker for a referral to NWAC.

This flyer lists all of Arlington’s pantries that are open to everyone, including AFAC, Our Lady Queen of Peace, Salvation Army, and Arlington Bridge Builders.

Children and families

Arlington Public Schools offers free breakfast and lunch to all students. Many schools offer after-school snacks as part of their after-school program. Families can complete the Free Meals Application for a qualification letter that provides discounts for other services. Apply to MySchoolApps. Talk to your child’s school social worker for links to other resources.

The Women’s, Infants’ and Children’s (WIC) Supplementary Nutrition Program provides nutritional support to expectant and new mothers, babies and children under 5 years of age. WIC peer counselors provide support to mothers who are breastfeeding and WIC provides infant formula to those who are not breastfeeding.

The elderly

The DHS Aging and Disability Services Resource Center can provide information and register you for any of the resources listed below. Call 703-228-1700.

the Social cafe 60+ offers free lunch and socializing to Arlingtonians over 60, regardless of income. Locations available at Langston-Brown and Arlington Mill Community Centers. Call 703-228-4747 to register.

The Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program offers $45 worth of coupons to spend at the Farmer’s Market each year (June through November) for low-income individuals. Apply here or call 703-228-1700 for more information.

Meals on Wheels provides meals for elderly people unable to prepare their own food. Call 703-228-1700 for more information.

The Senior Brown Bag program with Capital Area Food Bank provides a monthly bag of food to seniors living in The Shelton, Harvey Hall, Hunter’s Park, Colonial Village West and Lockwood Elmwood House Apartments. Contact the Resident Services Coordinator to register.

Arlington Neighborhood Village supports seniors with tasks such as grocery shopping and picking up prescriptions. Call 703-509-8057 to learn more.

Stretch your money

Double your money when you use SNAP at Farmers Markets.

SHARE the food network offers a bundle of produce and meats for $22 per month with a retail value of $45. Order your package through Macedonian Baptist Church at 703-521-7663 or Lomax AME Zion Church at 703-979-3738 and pick it up monthly in Green Valley.

FreshFarm offers a weekly bag of products for $8 for those who pay using SNAP or WIC. Weekly pickup at the Courthouse Farmer’s Market.

Virginia Cooperative Extension offers classes on financial management, cooking demonstrations, healthy eating on a budget, and growing your own food.

Food Security Working Group

The Food Safety Task Force is a group of community stakeholders working together to improve the food safety system and infrastructure in Arlington. The group works together for 12 to 18 months to develop a strategic food security plan that will address many of the challenges families face in accessing the food aid they need.
