Community Development – Official Site of the Government of Arlington County, Virginia

Through the Community Development Fund, the county provides funding and assistance to local community groups working to achieve the goals identified in the consolidated plan:

  • Create and maintain affordable housing
  • Promote healthy and independent families
  • Stabilize families at risk of homelessness
  • Foster dynamic and sustainable neighborhoods

Community development fund

The Community Development Fund provides grants through a combination of federal, state and local sources. There are currently two open funding notices.

Fiscal year 2023 (July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023)

NOFA for Fiscal Year 2023 is soliciting proposals for programs and services that help improve the economy and quality of life for low- and moderate-income individuals and households in Arlington. Eligible programs help achieve the goals outlined in Arlington County’s 2022-2026 Consolidated Plan. Typical programs include economic self-sufficiency, business development, job training and placement, community development, and more.

Grants under the Regular NOFA for fiscal year 2023 will be awarded for the period July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023 and typically range between $ 20,000 and $ 50,000. Applications are due on September 10.

Fiscal year 2022 (July 1, 2021 – June 30, 2022)

Federal Block Grant for Community Development (CDBG)

An annual grant formula from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the CDBG helps the county provide decent and affordable housing, clean and safe neighborhoods, and create economic opportunities.

Federal and State Block Grant for Community Services (CSBG)

The Block Grants for Community Services (CSBG) program provides funds to community action agencies and others who fight poverty at the community level. Arlington County can use these funds to meet local needs for employment, education, income management, housing, nutrition, emergency services and health.

Affordable Housing Investment Fund (AHIF)

The Affordable Housing Investment Fund (AHIF) is the county’s primary funding program for affordable housing development. Since 1988, AHIF has helped create the majority of Arlington’s 6,500+ engaged and affordable rental units. The Fund grants low-interest loans to developers and subsidizes rehabilitation.

Small grants program for eligible areas

The Small Grants for Eligible Areas program provides up to $ 1,000 to support neighborhood projects. The grants fund activities such as youth sports programs, community workshops, neighborhood festivals and job fairs.
